Robotics_Introduction

Total prize money worth Rs.105000 to be won!

With the main focus of Shaastra shifting towards becoming better rather than bigger, Robotics, being the face of Shaastra will lead by example. Along with being the perfect platform for all robotics “enthu junta”, this time Shaastra Robotics promises to provide an electrifying atmosphere for competitions. The problem statements have been designed to test the teams' designing, coding, strategy-making and executional skills at the grass-root levels.

With over 600 of the country’s best teams vying for the glory & the huge prize money, Robotics @ Shaastra is getting ready to take the spot of “Le premiere” of college robotics competitions in India. If you are the kind of person who always thinks of motors, micros & mosfets, you're on the right page. So what are you waiting for, go on and pick the problem statement(s) you like, go buy a few motors, drivers, a little solder and get cracking.

new

- Delta Force - FAQ section is updated as on 26th September

- List of selected TDP's for the Shaastra Robotics events has been uploaded.

Robotics_EventFormat

There are 3 Robotics events each with their own Problem Statements. Each one focuses on testing different skill sets. The three events are as follows:

1. A Manual Bot competition (Operation Delta) - The problem statement requires the participating teams to use only one manually operated bot each.

2. A Semi-Autonomous competition (Gold Rush) - The problem statement requires the teams to use one manually operated and one completely autonomous bot.

3. An Image processing competition (Behind Enemy Lines) - The problem statement requires the teams to use only one completely autonomous bot which can communicate with a computer which should be capable of processing an image and guiding the bot.

Though all the three events fall under the category of robotics, all the three are individual events with their own selection criteria, problem statement, rules and regulations and prizes. More information on each problem statement will be available soon.

Robotics_rules and regulations

1. The event is open to all colleges in India and abroad and there is no restriction on the
number of teams from any given college. Also a team might consist of students from different colleges.

2. Maximum number of members in a team can be four for each of the three problem statements.
A person involved in one of the problem statements can be involved in the other two also unless
he is a bot operator. This is because the events will be held somewhat simultaneously and his/her
presence in both the competitions cannot be ensured from our side.

3. Teams must be prepared to send a team description paper (TDP) and/or video/stills at least
two to three weeks prior to the competition. More details about this will be available soon.

4. The TDPs will be used to select the participants for the contests. You will be allowed to register once
you have been selected through the TDPs.

5. Refer to the Shaastra Certificate Policy for information regarding certificates.

6. IMPORTANT: Some of the rules may be clarified, corrected or added through FAQs. So please check the FAQ section. The final rulebook would consider all changes made through FAQs.

Robotics_FAQ

Gold Rush

IMP: Relaxation of Violation rules:
1. For all violations, the restart rules still hold but the violation points have been removed.

2. Also, disqualification due to violation type A has also been removed. However all violations of type A still cause a restart.

3. However, the no. of violations will be kept in count and will be used for ranking as the last criterion(after potential)

IMP: CHANGE IN ARENA II(Sep 25): The travel zone now has a wooden base covered with a white vinyl sheet instead of white paint. Black vinyl tapes are used for tracks(lines) over this white vinyl sheet. The same applies to all parts of the arena. Vinyl stickers of the colors specified in the problem statement are stuck over a wooden base instead of paint.

Q1: What is the weight of the gold coins in the Gold Rush problem statement?
Ans: The gold coins are nothing but 1Re coins which are in regulation currently but are colored gold. The weight added by the gold color will be negligible.

Q2: In the Gold Rush problem statement, can we place the battery outside the manual robot, near the handler?
Ans: No. The battery for both the autonomous and manual robots should be on-board.

Q3: In Gold Rush, how will the coins be placed? will they be scattered on the ground or will they be stacked one over the other as towers of 5 or 10?
Ans: The coins will just be kept inside the treasure chest (box). No particular effort will be taken to arrange them in any manner. You can assume it to be random.

Q4: Can readymade robotics kits be used?
Ans: Readymade robotics kits like Lego etc. should not be used. If used, the coordinators can choose to disqualify the team.

Q5: Can readymade controller boards be used?
Ans: No. If a PCB is used on the bot, the team has to produce at the time of the competition, the hard copies of schematic or gerber files.

Q6: Can readymade sensor modules and controllers(joysticks) be used?
Ans: Yes.

Q7: In Gold Rush, are the 40 points for the autonomous bot arriving at the loading zone and returning with the coins to the dock is applicable only for the first arrival/return or is it also applicable for subsequent visits ?
Ans: It is only possible to complete one round with the autonomous bot. Once the autonomous bot reaches the loading zone and comes back to the dock(with or w/o a coin), the match time ends for the team and Time bonus will be awarded as mentioned in the Scoring Pattern. It cannot start going back towards the loading zone again.

Q8: Can readymade motor driver boards be used?
Ans: No. The rule is same as for the controller boards.

Q9: What is the exact height of the treasure chest?
Ans: The top of the treasure chest coincides with the top of the wall (border of the arena). Therefore the exact height of the treasure chest is 10cm - 1.2cm(thickness of plywood of the islands) = 8.8cm.

Q10: What is the height of the disc obstacle placed at the center of the hexagon?
Ans: The disc obstacle is basically a cylinder of 12cm diameter and 8cm height. The term thickness of the disc refers to the height of the cylinder.

Q11: If, in a particular algorithm, the autonomous bot reaches the loading zone and comes back to the docks with or without collecting any gold coin, will it be considered as the end of trial?
Ans: No. The calling off of the trial within the three minutes is in your hands. We will not decide your end of the trial inside the three minutes. However note that you will get the time bonus only if you call off your trial. (Also recall that the time bonus can be availed only if you have already brought in atleast 1 gold coin to the docks).

Imp: In the Gold Rush problem statement, the Restarts of type 3(i.e the Restarts at the operator's will) will also cost 6 violation points like a type E violation. Also if the autonomous bot has already reached the loading zone (i.e completely over the loading zone), the operator can choose to restart from the loading zone rather than the docks.

Delta Force

Imp: Retry procedure
In case of a retry a team shall restart from the previous zone with the body of the robot lying vertically below the the obstacle which it must avoid immediately after taking the retry and the robot shall use the rails belonging to the previous zone for the retry.

Q1:      Can a robot pass through the danger area without getting any negative points?

Ans:    Yes the robot is allowed to pass through the danger area without any
negative points, it comes into play only when the match ends in a tie
i.e. they are holding onto the same numbered rails respectively  then it will come
   into play(refer winning  criteria).

Q2:    Are we allowed to overcome the obstacles by going over them?

Ans:   Yes, overcoming the obstacles by passing over them without touching them is allowed and if you touch them, you have to take a retry.

Q3:    What is the maximum number of team members allowed in a team?

Ans: The maximum number of members per team is four.

Q4:     Will the final Shaastra-09 Delta –Force arena look like the one given in the problem statement?

Ans:      The arena for Delta- Force will look similar to the one depicted in the problem statement structurally but the color pattern i.e. the danger and favorable area color pattern will not be the same and also the position of the static obstacles need not be the same as shown in the model.

Q5:    Is it necessary that the power supply of the robot be attached to its body?

Ans:  No, the robot can be powered externally also .

Q6: Is it necessary to attach a picture or a drawing of the robot in the TDP?

Ans:  It is not necessary to attach a picture or a drawing of your robot in you TDP but attaching them will increase the chances of your TDP getting selected for Shaastra Robotics.

Q7:  Can we use the first rail i.e. rail number one to set up the robot before the start of the match ?

Ans:Yes, you can use any one or both rails i.e, one and two, to set up your robot  before the start of the match.
