The charm of engineering lies in the ability of an engineer to model and hence make a fairly accurate quantitative analysis of complex real world phenomena. The Math Modelling event poses slightly complex but interesting physical phenomena which are to be modelled mathematically, and solved to some degree of accuracy.

Math Modelling is an on-the spot event which will showcase a class of problems that are beautiful and may have engineering applications. The event will host a wide variety of problems ranging from modelling simple actions of nature to complex state of the art engineering. In the past, participants are known to have developed some ingenious mathematical models – viral mutations, quantum computing, crack propagation and auctioning systems to name a few.

Qualification will be through a 3 hour written qualifying round. This will be followed by a 3 hour final. In the finals, selected teams may choose to attempt one or two of the many problem statements posed to them from different fields of engineering.

Winners will be selected based on the ingenuity, choice of assumptions and other sailent features of the model they construct.More weight will be given to the actual construction of model as compared to accuracy of calculations, etc., .

  • Teams may consists of as many as three members.
  • The event will be an on-the-spot event and will not require any pre-registration.
  • The decision of the coordinators is binding and final.

Great! How do I participate?
As mentioned above, Math Modelling is an on the spot event. Just turn up at Shaastra 2009, with a valid ID card and a friend or two.

How much math do I need to know?
Not much really. High school math along with a strong background of engineering tools like calculus and basic combinatorics should suffice. As in any competition, extra knowledge might help. Creative and rational thinking, along with the ability to filter out superflous data and simplify situations will matter the most. So don't leave your thinking cap behind.

I am new to this. Any problems for practice?

Yes, we will be putting up a couple of problems shortly.

Can I participate individually?
Yes. However, maximum size of teams is three, and we encourage you to team up. Some of the problems may require another head to crack.
