SciFi Writing_Introduction
The Science Fiction Writing Competition at Shaastra allows you to employ your imagination as the kaleidoscope through which the limits of the possible are defined. At this event, you can rewrite history or envision the future. Redefine the laws of gravity and the theories of relativity as you dream up alternate universes and envision fantastic futures. In the past, the event has evoked participation from all over the country and judges have included several literary stalwarts. And this year, Shaastra Science Fiction writing is bigger and better than ever.
In the online category besides the usual conventional short story writing and short sketch writing segments which are individual events, there shall be an exciting new graphic short story segment in which teams of five can participate. At the on-the-spot competition, the creativity, flair for language and originality of your writing shall be the criteria to decide the winners in the two categories - namely, conventional short story writing and short sketch writing. The topics for the event will be thought-provoking and fun and will inspire both the visionaries and the humorists.So be a part of SF writing at Shaastra 2009 and let your imagination unravel the endless possibilities of the universe and of reality.
Event Format
The event will be conducted in two sessions during Shaastra. Topics for both sessions will be different. Participants can take part in either or both sessions. In each session, the participants can write an entry for either or both of the following categories:-
* Conventional Short Story Writing
* Short Sketch Writing
Duration of event - 4 hours per session.
Rules and Regulations
- Conventional Short Story Writing - In this category, the participant will have to write a short story not exceeding 2500 words. The topics will be provided though the participant may choose to digress from those topics and develop his/her own storyline.
- Short Sketch Writing - In this category, the participants will have to write short sketches of 500 to 1000 words. The participant may choose to digress from the provided topics but should ensure that his/her work adheres to the format of Short Sketch Writing. A Short Sketch needs to be a standalone piece of fiction despite the fact that every element of the plot is not to be stated explicitly. In other words, your entries should provide sufficient hints that would allow a reader to fill in the blanks with his/her imagination.
